I'm not the ordinary musical-goer. The last time I saw a musical was in 1996 in London's West End. I actually saw 2 musicals in the same week. They were "Les Miserables" by Victor Hugo and "Starlight Express" by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Well when I decided to go to New York I ended up deciding to go see a Broadway musical. Then I had to figure out which musical to go see. I decided to go see "Finding Neverland" the musical. The musical is an adaption of the movie of the same name. It's the story of how J.M. Barrie came up with the story of Peter Pan. The reason to see the musical was easy because of 2 reasons. 1. Matthew Morrison, who plays the role of J. M. Barrie. I had first seen him on Glee, and followed his singing career too. 2. Gary Barlow who together with Eliot Kennedy has written the songs to the musical. I have always liked Gary as a singer and a songwriter. And I have always been a fan of the boyband Take That, which he is a member of.
So when the decision was made I bought a ticket, so I didn't have to do it when I arrived in New York.
The day finally came when I was going to see the musical. I didn't know what to expect since I hadn't seen the movie. So I didn't know the story before hand. I came to Lunt-Fontanne Theatre about 30 minutes before show start. The line was a tad long but when they opened the door we came in pretty quickly. I found my seat and then just to wait before it started. The first notes came from the orchestra and I knew it was starting. I won't write about what happend in the muscial since I won't spoil it if someone wants to see it.
The first hour of the musical went fast. After the last song in the first act there was an intermission for about 20-30 minutes I think. Then the second act started. Then after about 2 hours and 35 minutes the muscial had ended. Through all the muscial the cast was applauded after each song and they got a standing ovation at the end. And they deserved it. When it ended I actually felt like it went too quickly. And I was left with feeling that I wanted more.
I loved the musical and I was very impressed by Matthew Morrison's performance. It was a surreal experience seeing him on stage when I only had seen him on screen as Will Schuester in Glee. So it was nice seeing him doing theater. Laura Michelle Kelly who played the role as Sylvia Llewelyn Davies did a great performance. I was bascially impressed by the whole cast.
I loved all of the songs from the musical. But there was 2 songs which stood out for me. That was the song "Stronger" which Matthew Morrison sang. And the song "Something about this night" which some of the cast sang, Especially "Stronger" made an impact on me. It occasionally pops into my head. As this is the first time Gary Barlow writes to a musical he has done a very great job doing it. Hopefully this will not be the last time Gary Barlow writes music to a musical.
In the end "Finding Neverland" was a great musical. And since I didn't had any expectations I was pleasant surprised. So if you are in New York and "Finding Neverland" is playing then go see it. I highly recommend it. And even though I hadn't seen the movie before seing the musical I think that if you have seen the movie you will be just as entertained as I was.
